Malchow Accepts Iowa State Post

Steve Malchow, a senior level athletics administrator who has supervised communications initiatives for the University of Wisconsin athletics since 1990, has accepted an offer to join the Iowa State University Athletics Department staff as senior associate athletics director for communications. ISU athletics director Jamie Pollard made the announcement Monday evening. Malchow will oversee all communications initiatives for the Cyclones ' 18-sport NCAA Division I athletics program.
'This is a great day for Iowa State athletics,' Pollard said. 'Bringing Steve Malchow to ISU was one of my first priorities. To get him here from Wisconsin is a real coup for our program. Steve is a nationally respected athletics communications administrator who was crucial to the success and growth of athletics at Wisconsin. I will be working with Steve to create and present a strategic communications plan for Iowa State athletics. Steve's resume reflects his achievements and familiarity with the state of Iowa. He graduated from and worked at Iowa before going to Wisconsin and his father was a sportswriter in Sioux City. We could not have found a better fit.'
Malchow worked with Pollard to create Wisconsin's first strategic plan under athletics director Barry Alvarez. He had oversight of the athletics communications and internet services offices and supervised the video and technical services departments. During Malchow's tenure, Wisconsin enhanced its record-setting web site. He coordinated the production of department publishing efforts and served as a liaison with the school's broadcast and telecast partners.
'It's certainly an honor for me to join the experienced and talented senior leadership already in place at Iowa State and I'm very appreciative of the opportunity that Jamie Pollard has given to me,' said Malchow. 'A wonderful bonus for our family is the chance to return to my home state. At the same time, it is hard to leave the UW and all of the friends I've made the past 16 years. I'm grateful to Pat Richter and Barry Alvarez who gave me a shot to run my own communications department. The incredible professional opportunities I 've been exposed to were the result of the vision and leadership provided by them. The Badgers will always have a special place in my heart.'
Malchow received the 2000 Scoop Hudgins Award, given annually to the nation's top sports information director. He coordinated Ron Dayne's Heisman Trophy-winning campaign in 1999, handled media relations activities for eight bowl teams -- including three Rose Bowl champions -- and promoted 25 football All-Americans. He served as media coordinator for the 2002 NCAA Men's Basketball Regional Final and has received more than 40 citations from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) for publications excellence, including two 'Best in the Nation ' awards.
A Sioux City, Iowa native, Malchow has bachelor's degrees in marketing (1984) and management information systems (1990) and a minor in journalism and mass communications from Iowa. He worked as assistant director of sports information at Iowa from 1985-90, before serving on the Wisconsin staff as director of men's sports information (1990-2001), assistant athletics director (2001-04) and associate athletics director (2004-05).
Malchow and his wife, Barb (the former sports information director at Illinois), have a son, Bryce.
