Wisconsin women's golf head coach Todd Oehrlein recently announced that two student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent during the early signing period. Kelsey Verbeten (New Franken, Wis.) and Beth Weinstein (Highland Park, Ill.) will join the Badgers for the 2006-07 season.
Kelsey Verbeten comes to UW from Green Bay Preble High School. She finished as the runner-up at the WIAA High School state tournament twice, in 2002 and 2005, and was named first team all-state both years. Verbeten also received second team all-state honors in 2004. A four-time first team all-conference and academic all-state selection, Verbeten won the WWSGA State Junior Match Play championship in both 2004 and 2005. She also was a U.S. Junior Qualifier in 2005.
Beth Weinstein joins the Badgers from Highland Park High School. She won the 2005 Pepsi Little People's Golf Championship this past June with a 3-over 145 at Westview Golf Course in Quincy, Ill. A three-time all-conference selection, Weinstein was named first team all-state in 2004 and 2005. She also received High School MVP honors in 2003, 2004 and 2005. Weinstein won the Illinois Junior Champions Invitational in 2003 and was a U.S. Junior Qualifier in 2004 and 2005.
Now in his third season as head coach, Oehrlein knows that the winning experiences that Verbeten and Weinstein bring with them will be very beneficial to the team.
'We are excited to have Beth and Kelsey join our program, ' Oehrlein said. 'They both are tough-minded and very dedicated players. Both are tremendous competitors and know how to win golf tournaments. Their passion and commitment to everything they do will add a great deal to our program. We are fortunate that they chose Wisconsin and we look forward to helping them reach all of their goals. '
