November 27, 2005 | Women's Hockey
The No. 1 Wisconsin women's hockey team's 12-game winning streak was snapped by No. 4 New Hampshire, 2-1, Sunday at the Dartmouth Classic in Hanover, N.H. The Badgers fell to 12-2-0 in just their second season loss. The Wildcats took the Classic trophy and improved to 9-2-0.
A tough first period was punctuated with a UNH goal at 19:55 before the teams headed to the locker rooms. UNH took advantage of a power-play opportunity at 2:01 in the second to put the Wildcats ahead by two.
In the third, Jinelle Zaugg (Eagle River, Wis.) responded with a power-play goal to put the Badgers on the board at 5:06 in the third. Captain Sharon Cole (Bloomington, Minn.) and Meaghan Mikkelson (St. Albert, Alberta) were credited with assists. With at least three more near-misses thanks to Wildcat goalie Melissa Bourdon the teams skated scoreless through the remaining period scoreless.
With 23 seconds left in the game, the Badgers used their timeout to map out a quick score. The Badgers executed well, Bourdon denied Cole's tip-in attempt and sealed the Badger loss. Bourdon made 15 saves in the game.
For her part, Wisconsin goalie Meghan Horras (Appleton, Wis.) saved 21 shots in her first loss of the season.
Wisconsin will travel to Roseau, Minn., to take on Bemidji State in Western Collegiate Hockey Association action. The Badgers are 9-1-0 in conference play and have not lost to BSU since 2001. The Beavers split their weekend series with Ohio State and are 3-9-2 overall and 2-8-0 in WCHA action.
