Postgame Quotes
Wisconsin Head Coach Lisa Stone
Opening Statement:
'A lot of what our shooting woes was indeed due to Marquette 's defense. They played, they really disrupted us, and we couldn't get into a rhythm. We shot 20 percent in the first half as I'm sure every body 's aware. We never got into the flow tonight and a lot has to do with Marquette 's defense, but we can shoot better. We shot better in the second half but certainly not good enough.'
On Caroline Keiger:
'She's their leader. She's the energizer. She is the one that Terri Mitchell wants on the floor. She does a great job, gets the ball where you need to. She knew that they could go inside on us. But we just couldn't get into a rhythm offensively, therefore our defense wasn't as stellar as it has been. In fact, this might have been our poorest defensive performance of the year. '
On playing Notre Dame:
'We're going to see a lot of similarities, certainly. Again, Notre Dame is a ranked team, they're great, they've got a great point guard, as did Marquette and we're going to see a similar type of defense. Muffwt McGraw is known for a match-up zone defense and we're going to have to work a lot on that tomorrow. We have an early morning practice and it's not one to run at, you can't yell at kids for missing shots, we've got to shoot with more confidence, be the attacker, you know, be the spoiler right now. We want a great crowd on Sunday for Notre Dame and I'm certainly expecting that, but you can forget about this one if we play better on Sunday.'
Marquette Head Coach Terri Mitchell
Opening statement:
'It was a well-fought game on both teams. I just want to say that I think what Lisa (Stone) is doing with her team and her staff. I think they 're going to have a tremendous year ahead of them. I know she's obviously not pleased with the outcome, but I though it was well-fought. Strategy-wise you have to be on top of your game in every way and I'm proud of my players because so many of them stepped up when we got in foul trouble ' our freshmen stepped up. We 've been preaching all year that for us to be successful, the whole team has to come together. There are no superstars. You wear a Marquette uniform. You have a lot of pride about it and you just have to do it together as a team, and I think what you saw today we did as a team.'
On Marquette's strategy of making it hard for sophomores Janese Banks and Jolene Anderson to score:
'We talked about it all week. We have so much respect for offensive ability and what they can do that we wanted them to work extremely hard for their points. We knew they would get points. Janese and her 16 and Jolene got 11, but I felt like our team was always around them, always had a hand in their face, and they had to put up a lot of shots to get that. They both rebounded well, and we'll walk away from this game knowing that we didn't rebound well enough ' giving up 24 offensive boards is obviously nowhere near where we want to be. We wanted them to work, and if they scored, they scored, but were hoping to exhaust them throughout the game.'
