Alvarez to Receive Red Smith Award
December 22, 2005 | Football
University of Wisconsin football head coach Barry Alvarez will be given the 2006 Red Smith Award at a banquet on Jan. 17 at the Radisson Paper Valley Hotel in Appleton, Wis.
The award is given annually to an individual who has contributed or continues to contribute to sports either on or off the field in the state. Last year, former Green Bay Packers general manager Ron Wolf was honored.
In 16 years at UW, Alvarez has guided the Badgers to three Big Ten championships and three Rose Bowl victories. He will lead the team against Auburn on Jan. 2 in the Capital One Bowl, which will give him his 11th bowl appearance.
Following his retirement from coaching this season, Alvarez will continue working at Wisconsin as its athletics director, a position he began in April of 2004.
The Red Smith Award was named after Richard 'Red' Smith, a former professional football and baseball player. The event, in its 41st year, raises money to help local youth sports organizations.
