Capital One Bowl Diary: Day 4
December 29, 2005 | Football
Each day uwbadgers.com will describe the events of the day for the University of Wisconsin football team, which is playing Auburn in the Capital One Bowl on Jan 2. Today, read tight end Joel Nellis' recap of the fourth day of the nine-day trip:
Wednesday was an early wake-up. We had our usual morning routine of breakfast, meetings and then practice. Something you may be interested to know is how we got to practice by police escort. This is not just one squad car but eight motorcycles stopping traffic for us. It is the most efficient police operation I have ever seen. These officers know how to shut down traffic!
I can't give you a lot of practice details ' it 's highly confidential! But I can say we have been practicing well. Both sides of the ball seem to be working hard and having a good time doing it.
After practice, we had the opportunity to go to the Kids Day Festival, an event with under privileged children from the Orlando area. We were each paired with one kid and a player from Auburn. I think that some of us were a bit worried about going around with a player from Auburn, but I think once we got into the event, we all realized that it was about the kids and not about the game.
I toured around to different activities (face painting, carriage rides, obstacle courses, etc.) with a Tiger tight end and a young girl named Sara Ann. We learned that she has two cats and two gerbils. Sara Ann wants a dog but her dad won 't let her get one. All three of us had an awesome time.
[Editor's note: When the team returned to the hotel, many of the players headed to the pool to enjoy the weather, which by far was the nicest so far on this trip. Also, the second wave of the UW travel party arrived in the afternoon.]
In the evening, the Badgers had an opportunity to go to the Orlando Magic vs. New York Knicks game. I chose to stay back at the hotel. I guess I am spoiled by good basketball at UW, not the style the NBA plays.
Make sure to watch us on Jan. 2! Happy New Year's!
