Badgers Accept Capital One Bowl Invitation
December 04, 2005 | Football
The University of Wisconsin football program has accepted an invitation from the Florida Citrus Sports Selection Committee to face Auburn in the 60th Capital One Bowl game on Monday, Jan. 2, at the Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium in Orlando, Fla. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. EST (noon CST), with ABC televising the game live.
It will be the 17th bowl appearance in Wisconsin history and the 11th in the past 13 seasons under head coach Barry Alvarez. It will, however, be the Badgers' first appearance in the Capital One Bowl. UW is 7-3 in bowl games under Alvarez.
'Our entire program is thrilled about the opportunity to participate in such a prestigious bowl game,' said Alvarez. 'The Capital One Bowl has a tremendous reputation for being a hospitable, first-class organization. Orlando is a destination I know our fans will love. We will face a formidable opponent in Auburn and we have great respect for the quality program that Tommy Tuberville has put together. We are really looking forward to the entire experience in Orlando.'
Wisconsin finished the 2005 regular season (Alvarez's last as head coach) with a 9-3 overall record and a 5-3 mark (T3rd) in Big Ten action. The bowl game will give Wisconsin the opportunity to win 10 games for just the fourth time in school history.
Auburn finished its regular season with a 9-2 overall record and a 7-1 mark (T1st) in the Southeastern Conference's West Division.
The Badgers and Tigers have played twice. The teams tied 7-7 in Madison in 1931 and Auburn won a 28-14 decision in the 2003 Music City Bowl.
