Barry Davis' 2005 Wisconsin Wrestling Camps Kickoff Friday
June 17, 2005 | Wrestling
The first installment of the Barry Davis Wisconsin Wrestling Camps began Friday in Madison, Wis. The Junior Badger Camp is a weekend camp for young wrestlers ages 7-12 designed to guide athletes through the basics of wrestling and is facilitated by the UW coaches and wrestlers.
While it is too late to participate in this summer's junior camp, the UW wrestling program devised three other camps, each focusing on a different aspect of the sport and accommodating the beginner as well as the elite wrestler.
Next on the calendar, for the serious wrestler, is the Intensive Camp (June 25-30). The six-day camp challenges wrestlers to test their physical and mental strength. The UW coaches and wrestlers help participants develop a positive attitude towards training and competition as well as technique, strength training, conditioning and hard wrestling. This camp is also limited to the first 30 applicants and is only for high school applicants, grades 9-12.
The Technique Camp, July 8-10, is geared toward wrestlers in grades 6-12 and is designed to perfect the all-around technical skills with emphasis on upper body throws, mat wrestling, how to score back points, getting the pin and electrifying the wrestler's style. From basic skills to the essentials of an attack-oriented style of wrestling, this camp will be divided into groups that will ensure each camper is receiving the lever of instruction that will best benefit them.
For teams, Wisconsin hosts the Badger Team Camp (July 10-14). The camp offers an atmosphere for coaches and teams to attend. In addition to technical skills and team strategy, the camp will discuss nutrition, healthy weight-cutting and motivation techniques. The camp centers on developing team skills and stages a team and individual tournament with prizes for the top finishers.
