Davies WCHA Rookie of the Week
October 10, 2006 | Men's Hockey
Freshman forward Michael Davies earned the year's first WCHA Rookie of the Week honors for his performance last weekend against Northern Michigan.
Davies posted two goals in his Badger debut last Friday in Wisconsin's 3-0 victory over Northern Michigan at the Resch Center in Green Bay, Wis. He scored the game's first goal at 2:44 of the second period for the game-winning tally. He later added the Badgers' third goal in the third period to seal the UW victory. He also fired four shots and was a plus-2 in his collegiate debut.
The two goals by Davies marked the first Badger two-goal effort in a season opener since Kevin Granato in 2000, and also marked the first time since a UW rookie scored two goals in his debut since Brad Englehart did so on Dec. 2, 1994, against St. Cloud State after he sat out the first part of the season with an injury.
A 5-8, 167-pound freshman from Chesterfield, Mo., Davies chipped in four more shots during Saturday's 3-3 overtime tie.
Davies selection as WCHA Rookie of the Week is the Badgers' first since the 2004-05 season when Joe Pavelski captured the award on Oct. 25, 2004.
Also nominated this week were: Brian Connelly, D, CC; Tyler Ruegsegger, F, Denver; and Darcy Zajac, F, UND.
