The University of Wisconsin women's golf team announced Monday that two student-athletes have signed National Letters of Intent during the early signing period. Carly Werwie (Kenosha, Wis.) and Zahra Shah (London, England) will join the Badgers for the 2007-08 season.
'We are excited to have signed two quality junior golfers this year,' said head coach Todd Oehrlein. 'Carly and Zahra's national competitive background will be a huge asset to our program.'
Werwie, the 2006 Wisconsin Golf Coaches Association Co-player of the Year, comes to UW from Kenosha Bradford High School. She won the WIAA State High School Individual Championship in 2004 and 2005 as well as being a member of the 2005 WIAA State High School Championship team. A three-time all-state selection and four-time first-team South East Conference honoree, Werwie was a 2005 and 2006 USGA Junior Girls Qualifier, US Women 's Amateur Publinks Qualifier and was the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel's Player of the Year in 2005 and 2006 as well.
'Kenosha's Carly Werwie has extensive national experience and is a proven champion here in Wisconsin in multiple events,' said Oehrlein.
Shah is originally from London, England, but attended the Pendleton High School in Brandenton, Fla. A second-team All-American selection in 2005 and third-team selection in 2006, Shah won the 2005 Mission Inn Junior Masters Championship.
'Zahra has been attending the Ledbetter Academy in Florida for the past three years where she has received outstanding instruction."
