December 06, 2006 | Volleyball
Two members of the University of Wisconsin volleyball team have been named to the 12-member American Volleyball Coaches Association All-Mideast Regional team, the association announced today. Junior Jackie Simpson and freshman Brittney Dolgner were named to the honor team while junior Jocelyn Wack earned honorable mention honors.
Simpson, a 6-0 setter, picks up her first all-region honor after being named to the 2006 All-Big Ten Conference team last week. She was named the AVCA National Player of the Week and the Big Ten Player of the Week after setting the Badgers to wins over then-No. 2 Penn State and then-No. 24 Ohio State on Oct. 27 and Oct. 29, respectively. The Downers Grove, Ill., native ranks fourth in the Big Ten with 13.01 assists per game, which ties her career-best average. Simpson is third on the UW team with 0.91 blocks per game and fourth with 2.05 digs per game.
Dolgner, a 6-0 outside hitter, is only the second UW freshman to earn all-region honors. The Waupun, Wis., native earned All-Big Ten and Big Ten All-Freshman honors last week. Dolgner leads the Badgers and ranks 10th in the conference with 4.19 kills per game. She had a career-best 30 kills against Northwestern and has recorded double-digit kills in a team-best 23 matches. Dolgner ranks second on the UW team with 2.54 digs per game, having recorded double-figure digs in 10 matches.
Wack, a 5-11 libero, receives post-season recognition for the first time in her career. A native of Salem, Wis., Wack leads the Badgers and ranks sixth in the Big Ten with 4.48 digs per game. She set the NCAA record for consecutive matches with double-figure digs in 80 matches earlier this season and has led the team in digs in 28 of 32 matches this year. Wack has recorded double-figure digs in 29 matches this season and 20-or-more digs in five matches.
Simpson and Dolgner will now be entered into consideration for AVCA All-America honors, which will be announced Dec. 13.
