Badgers Spend Spring Break on Road
March 14, 2006 | Women's Golf
While most UW students are off relaxing during spring break, members of the Wisconsin women's golf team are hard at work honing their games during a nine-day trip to Texas and Georgia.
The team got an early start to spring break when it left Madison last Wednesday afternoon for College Station, Texas and the 'Mo'morial. The Badgers played a practice round at the Traditions Golf Club on Thursday afternoon before competing Friday through Sunday.
Following Sunday's final round, the team drove 100 miles to Houston to spend the night before departing for Atlanta early yesterday morning. The day was concluded with a late afternoon practice round at Reynolds Plantation.
This morning the team has a practice round scheduled at Cuscowilla Golf Course where UW will compete in a dual match against Augusta State tomorrow.
The Badgers and Jaguars crossed paths earlier this season at the Lady Razorback-Tyson/Embassy Suites Invitational last October. In that tournament, Wisconsin finished in 10th place while Augusta State claimed fifth.
The team will leave Georgia and return to Madison on Friday, but not before playing another practice round at Reynolds Plantation on Thursday.
In all, the team will play eight rounds in two states in the span of eight days. The opportunity to spend time together on the road while experiencing different courses and playing every day will only help the Badgers as they move through the rest of the spring schedule.
Although the spring season is still young, tomorrow's match against Augusta State will be Wisconsin's fourth competition this spring. The Badgers opened the spring with a win over Minnesota in match play back in February.
Two weeks later, the team traveled down to Puerto Rico for the Lady Puerto Rico Classic. Sophomore Katie Elliott (Madison, Wis.) led UW to a 12th-place finish by tying for sixth place individually. Elliott established new personal records for 36-hole score (147), 54-hole score (221) and best finish.
For her efforts, Elliott was named the Big Ten Women's Golfer of the Week for March 2. The award was Elliott's first and the first for Wisconsin since current senior Lindsay McMillan (Calgary, Alberta) earned the honor last March.
Elliott also appeared in the latest installment of 'Inside Badger Sports,' a new talk show on uwbadgers.com featuring UW student-athletes and coaches. Elliott and head coach Todd Oehrlein were on the show to discuss winter training and progress in the early spring season as well as to preview last weekend's 'Mo 'morial.

Wisconsin's men's golf team will be featured on this Friday's episode of 'Inside Badger Sports' as head coach Jim Schuman and junior Garrett Jones (Rewey, Wis.) will appear.
The women's golf team faces Augusta State tomorrow in a dual match at Cuscowilla Golf Course in Greensboro, Ga. The Badgers will take part in their next tournament March 25-26 at the Mountain View Classic in Tucson, Ariz.
