After the third session of the 2006 NCAA Championships, four Wisconsin wrestlers remain in pursuit of All-America honors. Badger senior Tom Clum (Arvada, Colo.) fell in the quarterfinals of the 133 lbs. weight class but will compete this evening in the consolation bracket. Also in action tonight are Tyler Turner (149) Craig Henning (157) and Dallas Herbst (197), all of which earned wins in the third and fourth round of the consolation bracket.
No. 3 Clum battled Matthew Valenti of Penn. in the quaterfinals. Valenti, seeded sixth, scored first with a takedown in the opening period to lead 2-0. In the second Clum earned an escape but Valenti answered with another takedown extending his lead to 4-1. Valenti would continue to dominate, notching another takedown in the third period while Clum could only manage an escape. The Penn wrestler moved on to the semifinals with a 7-2 win while Clum fell to the consolation bracket. He will face No. 10 Darrel Basquez of Cal Poly.
Ninth seeded Tyler Turner defeated Michigan State's Darren McKnight for the second time this season, previously defeating the Spartan 11-9 in dual action. At the championships Turner scored a take down in the third along with riding time to edge out McKnight, 3-2. In the fourth round of the consolation bracket Turner faced Patrick Simpson of Army. The pair was tied 3-3 at the end of the first before Turner gained control and won 9-5. The Badger returns to action tonight to face No. 7 Gregor Gillespie of Edinboro.
At 157 lbs. sophomore Craig Henning also notched two wins in the consolation bracket. The Chippewa Falls, Wis. native dominated Adam Glaser of Gardner-Webb in the third round, defeating him 7-1. No. 8 Henning then went on to face Nathan Galloway of Penn State. Earlier this season Henning and Galloway battled to a two-tie breaker match with Henning coming out on top 4-3. However this bout would not be as close and the Badger scored six near fall points to win, 8-3. Henning will face Andrew Flanagan of Harvard.
Freshman Dallas Herbst (Winneconne, Wis.) continued his run at the NCAA championships with a victory by pin over Charles Martin of Army in the third round of the consolation barcket. Herbst scored a taken down in the first period and traded reversals with Martin to lead 4-2 at the end of one. To start the second period Martin chose down and Herbst gained control with a half nelson, pinning Martin at 3:11. Herbst then went on to defeat Daren Burns of UNC-Greensboro 7-4.
At 141 lbs. Ed Gutnik (Iselin, N.J.) faced No. 11 seed Josh Wooton of Northern Illinois in the third round of the consolation bracket. After a scoreless first period, Wooton earned an escape in the second to lead 1-0, but Gutnik scrambled for a takedown to capture the lead 2-1. However, with only 15 seconds left Wooton notched a takedown that Gutnik was unable to answer, leaving the Badger with a heartbreaking 3-2 loss.
Wrestling action continues tonight at 6 p.m. with the quarterfinals and semifinals of the consolation bracket. A win tonight would guarantee All-America honors for any of the Badger wrestlers.
