The Wisconsin women's golf team honored its two seniors and handed out team awards at its annual banquet last Friday evening at the Pyle Center.
The 2005-06 Badgers made their mark in the school's record book during the season. Aside from posting the fifth-best 72-hole score in school history at the Big Ten Championships (1,252), UW recorded the second-lowest team season scoring average at 312.45 (9,686 strokes, 31 rounds). Wisconsin also tied the fifth-best 36-hole score with a 605 on the first day of the Lady Buckeye Invitational on April 22.
Seniors Jackie Obermueller (River Falls, Wis.) and Lindsay McMillan (Calgary, Alberta) saw their collegiate careers end at the Big Ten Championships last month. Both played in more than 115 rounds in their careers, including the 2003 NCAA Championships.
Obermueller and McMillan shared the Badger Leadership Award, which was voted on by the team. The two also both received the 3.5 GPA Recognition Award during the banquet.
Head coach Todd Oehrlein announced during the evening that McMillan had been named Wisconsin's representative for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. McMillan also received a special award in honor of her hole-in-one during the second round of the Lady Buckeye Invitational in April.
McMillan concluded her career with a scoring average of 79.54 (10,101 strokes, 127 rounds), the sixth-lowest career average in school history.
Sophomore Katie Elliott (Madison, Wis.) was named the team's Player of the Year after recording the team's best scoring average. Elliott claimed eighth place on the UW individual single-season scoring average list with a tournament scoring average of 77.00 (2,387 strokes, 31 rounds) this season. She also paced Wisconsin at six of 10 events this year, including all five this spring.
Elliott also received the Putting Award and the Most Improved Award, two honors determined by statistics. The Putting Award is handed out to the player with the fewest putts in regulation while the Most Improved Award goes to the player with the biggest improvement in scoring average from the previous season.
Freshman Jeana Dahl (Fargo, N.D.) earned the Newcomer of the Year Award for her performance during the season. Dahl was one of two players to compete in all 31 rounds and was the only Badger other than Elliott to post Wisconsin's best finish at an event. Dahl did so four times this season, all coming during the fall.
Junior Nicki Morse (Oconomowoc, Wis.) received the Badger Power Award, an honor voted on by the team and given for excellence and leadership in the team's strength and conditioning program.
The Wisconsin women's golf team finished in ninth place at the 2006 Big Ten Championships, held April 28-30 on the Indiana University Golf Course in Bloomington, Ind.
