UW Swimming and Diving Announces 2006-07 Schedule
July 20, 2006 | Men's Swimming & Diving
Twelve schools that placed among the top 20 at the men's and women's NCAA championships a year ago highlight the University of Wisconsin's 2006-07 swimming and diving schedule. Head coach Eric Hansen said the schedule will be a good test for his team as it prepares for the NCAA championships.
'With NCAAs and the Big Ten championships being a week earlier than they traditionally are, we're putting an emphasis on facing strong competition early in the season,' Hansen said. 'We're excited about our schedule. It really helps us to see the teams that are going to be scoring at NCAAs during the season. It helps us prepare for them.'
The Badgers will host a pair of events at the UW Natatorium, including the Big Ten Quad Jan. 19-20 against conference rivals Minnesota, Illinois and Purdue and will open the year hosting in-state rival UW-Green Bay Oct. 6.
UW, which returns 14 men and 17 women from last year's squad, travels to Iowa City, Iowa for a triangular meet with the Hawkeyes and UW-Milwaukee on Oct. 13-14.
The following weekend, the Badger women get an early test when they travel to Dallas for the SMU Classic. The event annually attracts some of the best women 's teams in the country. Last season, three of the teams at the meet finished in the top 10 at the NCAA championships.
Both teams will be tested Nov. 3-4 as the Badgers compete at Arizona against the Wildcats as well as UC-Santa Barbara. Last season, the Wildcat men placed second at the NCAA Championships, while the women finished third.
UW will then take a day trip to battle Big Ten rival Northwestern on Nov. 10 in Evanston, Ill.
The Badgers will travel to the site of the NCAA championships Nov. 17 for the Minnesota Invite. The teams will also make a return trip to Texas to close out the first part of the season at the University of Texas Invite Nov. 30-Dec. 2.
After a few weeks off from competition, the team will train in Hawaii during the holiday break and wrap up its trip by facing the University of Hawaii on Jan. 5.
Both squads will close out the regular season by hosting the Big Ten Quad on Jan. 19-20.
The women's Big Ten championships will take place at the University Aquatic Center in Minneapolis Feb. 8-10, while the men's conference championships are in Columbus, Ohio Feb. 15-17. Both squads will have another opportunity to qualify for the NCAA championships with the Go-Pher It meets. The women's meet is Feb. 18, while the men take to the pool Feb. 25.
NCAA Zone Diving championships will be held in Ann Arbob, Mich., March 2-4. Then NCAA championships will take place in Minneapolis with the women's meet March 8-10 and the men's March 15-17.
