Retired Numbers To Be Recognized This Fall

The University of Wisconsin will this fall retire the uniform number of one of its all-time great athletes and will officially recognize three other numbers that have already been retired.

Pat Richter, a star end for the Badgers' 1962 Big Ten championship team and later the school's director of athletics, will have his No. 88 retired during a halftime ceremony on Nov. 4 (UW hosts Penn State that day). Current UW receiver Jarvis Minton will continue to wear No. 88 until his career is finished. The number will then be permanently out of circulation.

Three other numbers (No. 80 Dave Schreiner on Oct. 7, No. 83 Allan Shafer on Oct. 14, and No. 40 Elroy 'Crazylegs' Hirsch on Oct. 28), already retired, will be officially recognized this fall and placed on the west facade of Camp Randall Stadium, along with Richter's and Wisconsin's two Heisman Trophy winners (Alan Ameche and Ron Dayne). Ameche's number is already retired and was officially recognized in 1988. Dayne's number is not officially retired yet.
