After a hard fought 90 minutes of action, the Wisconsin women's soccer team fell to Michigan, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Badgers dropped to 5-9-1 overall and 1-6 in the Big Ten, while Michigan improved to 3-8-4 overall and 1-4-3 in the conference.
The Wolverines struck first as they notched their first goal in the 12th minute of play. Sarah Banco found the back of the net off a shot from the far post eight yards out. The goal was her third of the season and left Michigan up, 1-0.
The Badgers responded only 15 minutes later as senior Marissa Sarkesian (Canton, Mich.) was able to find the back of the net off a trailing header to the upper left of the goal. An assist was credited to senior Taylor Walsh (Madison, Wis.). The goal, which was Sarkesian's first of the season, left the score tied, 1-1, going into the break.
Wisconsin was able to keep the Wolverines from scoring for the majority of the second half, until Michigan was able to notch the game-winning goal late in the 78th minute. Melissa Dobbyn recorded her second goal of the season off a low shot to the far corner, giving Michigan a one goal advantage over UW to conclude the game.
'Michigan physically was better than us,' said head coach Paula Wilkins. 'They took advantage of opportunities and were able to capitalize on two of our mistakes in the back which resulted in two goals.'
In goal for the Badgers, Jamie Klages (Coronado, Calif.) notched four saves in the game, while Michigan netminder Madison Gates recorded zero. Walsh led the Badgers with four shots, while Dobbyn led the Wolverines with five.
UW was out shot 8-to-13 by Michigan. The Badgers did not take any corner kicks in the match, while the Wolverines had six.
Wisconsin continues Big Ten play next weekend as it returns home to host Iowa and Minnesota at the McClimon Soccer Complex. The Badgers take on Iowa Friday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. UW will then go head to head with Minnesota at 1 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 28.
'It is really important that we take each of our games one game at a time. Tuesday we will start focusing on the details of what we need to do to beat Iowa on Friday, ' Wilkins said.
