UW Downed in Aggressive Match vs. PSU
October 05, 2007 | Women's Soccer
The Wisconsin women's soccer team lost a hard-fought battle to No. 11 Penn State Friday night at the McClimon Soccer Complex, 0-2. UW fell to 3-6-1 overall and 0-3 in the Big Ten, while Penn State improved to 8-2-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference.
The Badgers came out strong and aggressive at the beginning of the game, dominating possession of the ball for the early part of the first half. UW's first scoring opportunity came 11 minutes into play when senior Shannon Terry (Long Lake, Minn.) shot a ball that sailed just wide of the net.
In the 17th minute the Badgers were given another scoring opportunity when sophomore Krista Liskevych (Encinitas, Calif.) shot a ball just over the net from 35-to-40 yards out.
Despite the Badgers extremely aggressive play throughout the first half, the Nittany Lions scored their first and eventual game-winning goal in the 36th minute. Off an assist from junior Jessie Davis, freshman Megan Monroig shot a deflected ball from 12 yards out rolling past UW netminder Lynn Murray (Marietta, Ga.).
Only two minutes later, Penn State scored its second and final goal. Freshman Danielle Toney capitalized on a breakaway off the second ball from a goal kick. Assists were credited to keeper Alyssa Naeher and sophomore Katie Schoepfer. Toney's goal left the Badgers down 2-0 going into the break.
The Badgers came out in the second half making more tackles and winning more balls. UW was able to hold off the top-ranked Penn State offense not allowing them to score during the second half. Wisconsin's first scoring opportunity of the second half came only two minutes in as Badger senior Katy Meuer (Madison, Wis.) took a shot on goal from the left side. Although Meuer was unable to find the back of the net, UW kept up pressure on the Penn State defense.
At the end of the game, Liskevych led the Badgers with three shots. Meuer, Terry and freshman Roxanne Carlson (Cedarburg, Wis.) each tallied one shot after 90 minutes of play. Penn State's Monroig recorded three shots in the game including one shot-on-goal.
In the match, Wisconsin took three corner kicks, while the Nittany Lions tallied five.
