Horwath Named Co-Defensive Player of the Week

After helping the Wisconsin men's soccer team move up to sixth place in the Big Ten standings with a 0-0 draw against No. 10 Indiana on Sunday, sophomore goalkeeper Alex Horwath has been named the Big Ten Co-Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.
Horwath made five saves against the Hoosiers to record his seventh shutout of the season, moving him into 10th place on Wisconsin's single-season shutout list. The Woodbine, Md., native is just the second keeper to shut out Indiana this season.
Despite being out-shot 23-7 in the contest, Horwath helped the Badgers end a 14-match losing streak against the Hoosiers that dated back to a 2-0 victory in Madison in 1995.
The award is the second of the season for Horwath as he was also named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week on Sept. 17 after shutting out No. 20 Gonzaga at the UW-Milwaukee Panther Classic.
Sharing the award with Horwath was Indiana goalkeeper Chay Cain, who also made five saves in Sunday's contest.
Horwath and the Badgers next travel to East Lansing, Mich., for the 2007 Big Ten tournament Nov. 8-11. Wisconsin, the sixth seed, opens the tournament against No. 3 seed Northwestern at 9 a.m. ET on Thursday. The winner of that contest will face the winner of the second quarterfinal between Ohio State and Michigan.
