Try going from a 7-2 deficit to a 4-4 tie in a softball game. It happened Friday, and it helped the Badgers complete a two-game sweep on day one of the Georgia Tech Buzz Classic.
Wisconsin (8-4) beat Morehead State 3-1 and Florida A&M 8-4 in its first two games of pool play at Twin Creek Softball Complex. The Badgers face East Tennessee State (1 p.m. CST) and Georgia State (4 p.m.) on Saturday.
Wisconsin trailed Florida A&M 4-2 in the bottom of the third inning when Rattler second baseman Turelle Farmer hit a three-run homer to right field. The blast temporarily gave Florida A&M a five-run lead, but UW head coach Chandelle Schulte stepped out of the dugout after Farmer had completed her trot.
Farmer had reached base in the previous inning and was lifted for a pinch runner. When the inning was over, Farmer retook her position in the infield, but her coach did not report the substitution to the home plate umpire. When Farmer homered, she did so in place of the pinch runner.
When Schulte correctly pointed this out to the umpire, the three-run homer was taken off the scoreboard and an out was recorded in its place. Wisconsin scored six unanswered runs following the incident. Florida A&M managed two base runners over the final four innings.
Eden Brock (4-3) earned both wins in the circle for the Badgers. She struck out a career-high 14 batters in a complete-game effort against Morehead State. Brock added eight punch outs in 4 1/3 innings of relief against Florida A&M.
Brock became the fourth Badger pitcher to record 400 career strikeouts. She had 22 Friday for a total of 404. Brock allowed one run on seven hits in 11 1/3 innings pitched. She stands in sole possession of second place on UW's career wins list with 54.
Katie Hnatyk failed to homer in her fifth consecutive game, but did hit a two-run shot in game two against the Rattlers. She leads the Big Ten with six this season and has 25 for her career.
Lynn Anderson provided the game-winning single in the bottom of the fourth inning against Morehead State. Liz Klemp gave Wisconsin a 6-4 lead against Florida A&M with a two-run single in the top of the sixth. Hnatyk made it 8-4 with her homer in the seventh.
Joey Daniels and Sam Polito each had three hits and an RBI Friday. Polito scored career run No. 108 against Florida A&M. She stands five runs shy of UW's career record.
