
Women's Golf Set to Compete in Lady Buckeye Invitational

After a one-week absence, the University of Wisconsin women's golf team returns to action this weekend as it heads to Columbus, Ohio for the Lady Buckeye Invitational. This 54-hole tournament will be played at the par-72, 5,887-yard The Ohio State University Golf Club Scarlet Course. Competing for the Badgers will be senior Jill Ries, junior Katie Elliott, sophomores Jeana Dahl and Isabel Alvarez and freshmen Heather Herrick and Kelsey Verbeten.
Ohio State will serve as host to the 13-team field. Nine out of the 13 teams are currently ranked in the top-100 of GolfWeek's latest poll. 12th ranked Purdue is the top team entering competition and the Boilermakers are joined by Kent State (29), Ohio State (32), Northwestern (33), Indiana (48), Iowa (84), Wisconsin (90), Eastern Michigan (92) and Toledo (94) in the top-100.
Last time out, the Badgers finished 12th at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic. The team finished 46 strokes over par with a 904 (305-298-307).
For the 14th time in the team's last 15 events, Elliott was the top Badger finisher. The Madison, Wis. native tied for 22nd place by shooting a seven-over par 223 (76-74-73).
Alvarez (Gijon, Spain) made history during her tournament en route to a 29th place finish. During Saturday's second round, Alvarez tied the school record for 18 holes by firing a 66. She also set new personal lows for 36 and 54 holes with a 145 and an eight-over 224 (79-66-79), respectively.
Ries was one of two Badger golfers competing as individuals for the tournament. The Madison, Wis. native established new personal lows for 36 and 54 holes by shooting a 10-over par 226 (74-74-78).
Ries and Alvarez weren't the only Badgers to set new personal lows during the tournament. Verbeten (Green Bay, Wis.) also lowered her low score for 54 holes to 227 (75-77-75), finishing 11 strokes over par. Verbeten finished in a tie for 46th place.
Dahl (Fargo, N.D.) was the fifth-best Badger finisher for the tournament. She shot a 22-over par 238 (75-81-82) to come in tied for 83rd.
Joining Ries as an individual was Herrick. The Hartland, Wis. native set new personal lows for 18, 36 and 54 holes by shooting a 28-over par 244 (75-83-86). She finished in a tie for 98th place.
Fellow freshman Beth Weinstein (Highland Park, Ill.) finished in 100th place. Appearing in just her third career tournament, Weinstein was 29 strokes over par with a 245 (83-82-80).
The teams will play 36 holes on Saturday and the final 18 on Sunday. Tee times for both days are set for 8:30 a.m. Golfstat.com will have live updates every three holes, otherwise fans can check back to UWBadgers.com for results.
