
Badgers in Eighth Following Day One at Big Ten Championships

With the first 36 holes complete, the University of Wisconsin women's golf team is in eighth place at the 2007 Big Ten championships at the par-72, 6,237-yard Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich.
The Badgers opened play by shooting a 29-over par 317 in round one, and followed it up by firing a 34-over 322 in round two. The Badgers are 63 strokes over par with a 639 and trail first-place Michigan State by 39 strokes.
The Badgers' top finisher on the day was sophomore Jeana Dahl (Fargo, N.D.). Dahl is currently tied for 11th with a 12-over par 156. In round one, Dahl shot an eight-over 80 to finish tied for 28th, and followed that up with a four-over 76 in round two to climb up the leader board. She trails leader Rachel Meikle of Michigan State by 14 strokes.
Freshman Kelsey Verbeten (Green Bay, Wis.) is tied for 24th after the first 36 holes. Verbeten was consistent on the day as she shot a seven-over 79 in round one and followed it up with an eight-over 80 in round two. For the tournament, she is 15-over par with a 159.
Three strokes behind Verbeten is junior Katie Elliott (Madison, Wis.). Entering the tournament as the team's leader in scoring average, Elliott is currently tied for 38th at an 18-over par 162. She finished round one in a tie for 43rd after recording a 10-over 82, and followed it up with an eight-over 80 in round two.
Freshman Heather Herrick (Hartland, Wis.) had the top round on the day as she opened with a four-over 76, one off her career-best, in round one to put herself in sixth place. She fell back down to a tie for 44th though as she shot a 15-over 87 in round two. For the tournament, Herrick is 19-over par with a 163.
Sophomore Isabel Alvarez (Gijon, Spain) is in a three-way tie for 56th. Alvarez opened play with a 10-over 82 in round one, and followed it with a 14-over 86 in round two. She is 24-over par with a 168 after the first two rounds.
Also competing for the Badgers is senior Jill Ries. The Middleton, Wis. native is in 62nd place after the first 36 holes of play. In round one Ries shot a 15-over 87. In round two she shot a 17-over 89 to put herself 32 strokes over par for the tournament with a 176.
The Badgers return to action tomorrow afternoon for the third round of the 2007 Big Ten championships. Elliott will tee off at 12:45, while Dahl will do so at 12:53, Alvarez at 1:01, Verbeten at 1:09, Ries at 1:17 and Herrick at 1:25. Fans can follow live stats by going to Golfstat.com.
