
Women's Golf Falls to 10th at Big Ten Championships

By shooting a 34-over par 322 for the second straight round, the University of Wisconsin women's golf team fell to 10th place following the third round of the 2007 Big Ten championships at the par-72, 6,237-yard Forest Akers West Golf Course in East Lansing, Mich.
Wisconsin, which was in eighth place after round two, is now 97-over par with a 961 (317-322-322). The Badgers trail first place Michigan State by 71 strokes as they head to tomorrow's final round.
For the second straight day, sophomore Jeana Dahl ends play as the top Badger golfer. The Fargo, N.D. native matched her first round total by shooting an eight-over 80. Dahl, who was tied for 11th after round two, now sits in 23rd. She is 20-over par for the tournament with a 236 (80-76-80) and is 23 strokes behind tournament leader Rachel Meikle of Michigan State.
Junior Katie Elliott (Madison, Wis.) moved up three spots to finish round three in a tie for 35th. The team's leader in scoring average entering the tournament, Elliott had her best round of the tournament on Saturday as she shot a six-over 78. She is now 24-over par with a 240 (82-80-78) for the tournament.
One stroke behind Elliott is freshman Kelsey Verbeten (Green Bay, Wis.). Verbeten fell from a tie for 24th into a tie for 38th after recording a 10-over 82 during the third round. Her round puts her 25 strokes over par with a total score of 241 (79-80-82).
Sophomore Isabel Alvarez (Gijon, Spain) remains in 56th place following round three. Alvarez equaled her opening round score of 10-over 82 on Saturday to keep her round two position. With a three-round total of 250 (82-86-82), Alvarez is 34 strokes over par.
Trailing Alvarez by one stroke is freshman Heather Herrick. The Hartland, Wis. native recorded a 16-over par 88 on Saturday to fall from a tie for 44th into a tie for 57th. She is 35-over par for the tournament with a 251 (76-87-88).
The team's lone senior, Jill Ries, recorded her best round of the tournament on Saturday as she fired a 12-over 84. The round dropped her one spot from 62nd to 63rd. With a total score of 260, Ries is 44-over par with a 260 (87-89-84).
The Badgers return to action tomorrow morning for the final round of the 2007 Big Ten championships. Ries will tee off at 9:00 a.m., while Herrick will do so at 9:10, Alvarez at 9:20, Verbeten at 9:30, Elliott at 9:40 and Dahl at 9:50. Fans log on to Golfstat.com for live stats.
