MADISON, Wis. ' Demi Omole, a senior on the University of Wisconsin's men's track team, was named the NCAA Division I District Athlete of the Year for the Great Lakes region, the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced today.
Omole won both the 100 meters and 200 meters and anchored Wisconsin's 400 meter relay to victory at the Big Ten Conference meet, which helped the Badgers claim their fourth straight men's championship. He finished second in the 100 meters at the NCAA Mideast Regional. Omole's best time of 10.19 ranks him fifth entering this weekend's NCAA championships. The Milwaukee native finished second in the 60 meters at the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championships.
The USTFCCCA honors the top men and women in track and field events for the nine districts in Division I Outdoor Track and Field.
Jerry Schumacher, a distance coach for the Badgers, was selected as the 2007 NCAA Division I Assistant Coach of the Year for the Great Lakes region. He has served as the assistant men's track and head men's cross country coach for the past nine years.
Wisconsin won the 2007 NCAA Men's Indoor Track and Field title, where Schumacher's distance group scored 28 points. The Badgers enter the outdoor national championships with the defending champion in the 5,000 meters (Chris Solinsky) and the third-fastest collegian in the 10,000 meters(Tim Nelson).
Schumacher also aided Wisconsin to the Big Ten Conference 'triple crown ' this school year with conference titles in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track.
The Division I Assistant Coaches of the Year are selected on the basis of both indoor and outdoor accomplishments.
