August 31, 2007 | Men's Hockey
Wisconsin men's hockey freshman-to-be Kyle Turris (New Westminster, B.C.) is currently taking part in an historic hockey event ' the 2007 Super Series between Canada and Rusia. The Canada/Russia Super Series was created to commemorate the 35th anniversary of the 1972 Summit Series, the eight-game series that started the Canada-Russia hockey rivalry that still exists today. This year's event runs Aug. 27 through Sept. 9, with the first four games in Russia, and the last four held in Canada.
In 1972, the Canadians squeaked by the Russians, taking the series by a 4-3-1 count. This time around, Canada has built up a 3-0 series lead.
Another difference in the series is in the competitors. In the original series, the Canadians and Russians sent their best players. This time, Canada and Russia sent their best players under 20 years old.
One of those is Kyle Turris, who scored a penalty-shot goal during a 4-2 victory in game one and added a second goal in a 3-0 win in game two, also collected a tally in game three during Friday morning's 6-2 triumph. The No. 3 overall pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the Phoenix Coyotes, Turris currently shares the tournament goal-scoring lead with teammate Stefan Legein.
