UW Ends Lumberjacks Five-Game Unbeaten Streak
September 16, 2007 | Women's Soccer
An eighth-minute game-winning goal by Wisconsin junior Tricia Krombach snapped Northern Arizona's five-game unbeaten streak Sunday afternoon at Lumberjack Stadium in Flagstaff, Ariz., as UW went on to beat the Lumberjacks 1-0. The Badgers improve to 3-2-1 overall this season.
To open the game, NAU (3-1-2) controlled the ball for the first seven minutes, as keeper UW Jamie Klages (Coronado, Calif.) made two saves before Wisconsin took possession of the ball.
Down the field, a corner kick by Sheri Ferron (Brookfield, Wis.) resulted in Krombach 's (Appleton, Wis.) first goal of the season and as a Badger. The goal was Wisconsin's first shot-on-goal of the game. The assist was Ferron's first point of the season and sixth career assist.
'It was a set piece that we were working on all week,' head coach Paula Wilkins said. 'I was very happy with the result and having Tricia was there to finish it. '
Notably, Wisconsin's goal snapped NAU goalkeeper Elizabeth Winkelblech 's 513 minute, 13 second shutout streak. Winkelblech ended the game with four saves.
'With all her shutout minutes we knew we were going to have to play really well,' Wilkins added. 'For us we just created a scramble near the box that created the opportunity.'
Wisconsin, who was out-shot 8-to-4 in the first half, took twice as many shots in the second half, finishing the game with 10 shots compared to NAU's eight. UW put five shots-on-goal, while NAU put four shots-on-goal.
Klages tallied four saves in the game, earning her third win as a Badger.
'We are really exited for the win,' Wilkins said. 'It was a hard road trip for us in terms of travel and two quality opponents, but we are happy with how our players performed today.'
Wisconsin returns to action next week at the McClimon Soccer Complex, where the Badgers are unbeaten this season. UW's non-conference schedule continues as the Badgers face UW-Milwaukee at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 21 and Northern Iowa at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25.
On Friday, Sept. 28, UW begins Big Ten Conference play, taking on Purdue in West Lafayette, Ind. The 4 p.m. game will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network.
