Gilreath Honored by Big Ten
September 17, 2007 | Football
Freshman David Gilreath was named the Big Ten's Special Teams Player of the Week after Wisconsin's 45-31 win over The Citadel. Gilreath totaled 148 return yards, including 75 yards on three kickoffs (25.0 avg.) and 73 yards on four punts (18.3 avg.).
The wide receiver continually put Wisconsin in favorable field position, as the team averaged a starting spot of their own 40-yard line. Gilreath was only one man away from breaking his first punt return for a touchdown, when he was tripped up at The Citadel 's 42 yard line early in the first quarter.
The honor is Gilreath's first and the first Badger special team's player to receive the award since Taylor Mehlhaff did so on Oct. 30, 2006.
Gilreath is the first true freshman since Ron Dayne in 1996 to receive a Big Ten weekly award.
