Badgers Take on In-State Rival, UW-Milwaukee
September 20, 2007 | Women's Soccer
The Wisconsin women's soccer team, who stands unbeaten at home, takes on in-state rival UW-Milwaukee Friday, Sept. 21 at the McClimon Soccer Complex. The match, beginning at 7 p.m., is UW's only game of the week.
The Badgers (3-2-1) have topped the Panthers 17 times in their last 23 meetings, losing only twice. UW, who faced UWM in November of 2006, fell 0-1 at Engelmann Field in Milwaukee.
UW-Milwaukee comes to Madison on Friday after a scoreless weekend. Last Friday, the Panthers fell to then-No. 9 Boston College in Boston, 1-0. UW-Milwaukee's season record evened out to 3-3 after losing to Harvard 1-0 on Sunday.
The Panthers have tallied six goals on the season in six games. In each of their three losses, Milwaukee was unable to score one goal, losing 1-0 in each match. Junior goalkeeper Erin Kane owns a 3-3 record, totaling 17 saves on the season. Kane has started all of UW-Milwaukee's games, earning two shutouts and allowing only four goals.
UW-Milwaukee was in Madison once already this season, participating in the Wisconsin Invitational Sept. 7 and 9. Although the Panthers did not face the Badgers, they did see playing time on the McClimon Soccer Complex field. UWM finished the weekend 1-0, falling to Boston University 0-1 on Friday and defeating UC Santa Barbara 1-0 Sunday in double overtime.
Last weekend, the Badgers challenged Brigham Young University on Friday and Northern Arizona on Sunday.
UW lost to BYU 1-0, but was able to ward off all but one of the Cougars' seven shots-on-goal. In the game, the Badgers dominated most of the first half, taking seven corner kicks, but were unable to capitalize. BYU took over in the second half, scoring in the 63rd minute. BYU is one of only three Division 1 schools who have yet to allow a goal in the 2007 season.
Shaking off their loss to BYU, the Badgers answered back by shutting out NAU 1-0 on Sept. 16. The Lumberjacks were unbeaten in five games before facing Wisconsin. The Badgers ended NAU keeper Liz Winkelblech's 513 minute, 53 second shutout streak in the eighth minute on Sunday.
Wisconsin's only goal of the weekend came from UW forward, Tricia Krombach (Appleton, Wis.). The goal, which was Krombach's first as a Badger, came off a corner kick from senior Sheri Ferron (Brookfield, Wis.). On the set piece, Ferron 's shot landed near the net where Krombach finished it off for the game-winning goal.
Friday is 'Student Night' in which all UW students get in free with a student I.D. In addition, the first 100 UW students to enter the gate receive a free pair of Crocs.
