September 25, 2007 | Women's Soccer
The Wisconsin women's soccer team (3-3-1) is set to play three games this week, including its first two conference matches of the season. The Badgers' first match is Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. when they face non-conference foe Northern Iowa at their own McClimon Soccer Complex. This will be the first meeting between UW and Northern Iowa.
Wisconsin then travels to Indiana to take on its first two Big Ten opponents. Friday 's 4 p.m. game against the No. 11 Boilermakers will be broadcast live on the Big Ten Network. On Sunday, UW takes on Indiana at 2 p.m.
Last Friday night, a severe weather advisory and torrential rain forced an 85-minute delay at McClimon Soccer Complex, where Wisconsin was facing in-state rival UW-Milwaukee. After a relatively quiet first period, the Panthers came out strong to score the eventual game winning goal just minutes into the second half. The loss ended Wisconsin's two-game unbeaten streak at home.
Wisconsin goaltender Jamie Klages (Coronado, Calif.) tallied seven saves in 90 minutes, giving up just one goal in the Badgers' 0-1 loss to the Panthers. Klages has recorded 38 saves in seven games for Wisconsin. In the game, UW put three shots-on-goal compared to eight from the Panthers. The Badgers took five corner kicks in the game, compared to Milwaukee's two.
Leading the way for the Badgers is junior forward Taylor Walsh (Madison, Wis.) who has taken a team-best 13 shots tallying two goals in seven games, including the game-winner against Boston University on Sept. 9.
Klages has played all 650 minutes in goal for the Badgers, allowing just seven goals on the year. The Nebraska-transfer owns a .97 goals-against-average, and a .844 save percentage, which ranks her third in the Big Ten Conference. Klages has recorded three shutouts this season, two resulting in victories.
Northern Iowa (3-5-1) defeated Air Force 1-0 in overtime last Friday; however, fell on Sunday to San Jose State 2-0. Panthers keeper Heidi O'Mara tallied a season-high 11 saves in Sunday's game. Freshman Chelsie Hochstedler leads UNI in shots with 18 and in points with 12 off of six goals in nine games.
Hochstedler's six season goals are just two away from the Northern Iowa single season record of eight. Wearing No. 12, the newcomer has recorded 12 points this season, all from goals.
