
Badgers Finish Second at Wolverine Invite

After three rounds of play on the par-71, 6,098 yard U-M Golf Course in Ann Arbor, Mich., the Wisconsin women's golf team finished second at the Wolverine Invitational. The Badgers totaled a score of 908 (310-297-301) and were just four strokes behind the invitational champion, Notre Dame (303-297-304=904).
Wisconsin's second place finish at the Wolverine Invitational is its best invitational finish since placing second at the 2006 Badger Invite.
Three of the six Badger golfers placed in the top 15 individual finishers while all six finished within the top 30 of the 60 competitors. Natasha Lopez led the way with her sixth place finish, which is the highest standing of her Badger career. The junior transfer from Asuncion, Paraguay scored a 78, 74 and 73 in the three respective rounds for a final tally of 225.
Senior Katie Elliot (Madison, Wis.) was close behind with her tie for ninth place. She totaled a score of 228 with three-round scores of 81, 74 and 73. Jeana Dahl (Fargo, N.D.) finished 14th with a three-round score of 230 (81-73-76). The junior's second round tally of 73 is a season low.
Sophomores Beth Weinsten (Highland Park, Ill.) and Kelsey Verbeten (Green Bay, Wis.) tied for 21st, scoring 233. For the second-straight invite, Weinsten bettered her career low for three rounds. Last weekend at the Lady Northern Invite, she scored a 245 and again shattered her personal best at the Wolverine Invitational with a 233.Weinstein scored a 77 in the first two rounds and finished the invite with a 79. Verbeten tallied a season-low 74 in the first round and scored a 76 and 83 in the final two rounds.
Junior Isabel Alvarez (Gijon, Spain) rounded out the Wisconsin competitors and finished tied for 28th with a score of 236 (83-74-79).
Wisconsin returns to the course next weekend with competition at the Iowa Invitational. The two-day invite begins Saturday, Oct. 6, and will be played on the Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa.
