
UW Grapplers go 4-0 at Lonestar Duals

The No. 14 Wisconsin wrestling team competed in four duals at the 11th annual Lonestar Duals in South Grand Prairie, Texas Saturday. The Badgers finished 4-0 and improve to 8-1-1 on the season (0-1-0 Big Ten Conference). The team opened up with a 28-7 win over Utah Valley State, defeated Cal State Fullerton 28-12 in the second match of the day, tabbed a 34-6 win over Brown and finished with a 23-12 win against No. 21 Navy.
Sophomore Kyle Ruschell, senior Craig Henning and junior Dallas Herbst won all four of their bouts Saturday. Henning had two pins on the day at 157 lbs. and improves to 14-1. Ruschell competed at 141 lbs. and is now 17-3 on the season while Herbst (197 lbs.) improves to a team-best 18-1. With the win over Navy, Wisconsin is now 2-1 against ranked opponents this season.
In the first dual of the day, Wisconsin won eight bouts against Utah Valley State, which included two tech fall wins at 133 lbs. and 157 lbs. Junior Zach Tanelli faced Logan Wilson at 133 lbs. and won by a 16-0 decision while Henning defeated the Wolverines' Nate Kearsley, 15-0. Senior Danny Clum made his dual season debut at 165 lbs. and scored three points for the Badgers with a 7-3 win over Grthart Vuksinick.
Against Cal State-Fullerton, the Badgers won another seven bouts and had two pins in the dual. Henning recorded his first pin of the day in 2:26 against Devan Velasquez while senior Jake Donar pinned the Titans' Teddy Bristol in 2:56 at 165 lbs. Tanelli, ranked No. 18, captured his second win of the day and upset No. 16 T.J. Dillashaw, 5-3 at 133 lbs. Senior Collin Cudd returned to the Badger lineup at 125 lbs. for the first time since the Cliff Keen Invite back on Nov. 30-Dec. 1. Cudd returned with a win, defeating CSF 's Andre Gonzalez, 10-3. Junior Justin Peterson also recorded a major decision victory for Wisconsin, defeating CSF's Todd Noel, 11-0 at 174 lbs.
Wisconsin had its biggest win of the day against Brown. In the match, the Badgers won nine of the 10 bouts, which included two pins, two major decision victories and one tech fall. Both Henning and Donar tabbed their second pins of the day, this time Henning 's came in 1:28 against Tom Fazio and Donar's at 1:04 against Chris Musser. Cudd scored five points for the Badgers with a 19-4 tech fall against Nathan Myers. Peterson had his second major decision victory of the day, sixth of the season, defeating Brown's Andrew Jimenez, 14-0 at 174 lbs., while Herbst tallied a 9-0 major decision over Leo Saniuk.
The Badgers closed the day winning seven bouts in their match against Navy. Ruschell and Henning both had major decision victories for Wisconsin. Ruschell faced Glenn Shober and captured a 10-0 victory while Henning defeated Joel Ahern, 8-0.
The Badgers take another week off from competition and return to action with another road trip the weekend of Jan. 18-20. Wisconsin heads to Ames, Iowa to take on No. 2 Iowa State on Jan. 18 and then to Norman, Okla., to face Oklahoma, Jan. 20. UW's bout against Oklahoma will broadcast on ESPNU.
