Wisconsin takes down Michigan 3-1 at home
October 17, 2008 | Women's Soccer
The Wisconsin women's soccer team tallied its second Big Ten conference win and its second consecutive home victory Friday night against Michigan, defeating the Wolverines 3-1. The win boosted the Badgers to an 8-6-1 season record (2-4-0 in the Big Ten), and it brought Michigan's record down to 4-8-4, 1-4-1 in the conference.
The Badgers had the game locked up in the first half, as they scored all three of their goals in the first 21 minutes of play. Michigan's goal did not come until late in the game with a little over two minutes left to play, keeping Wisconsin goalkeeper Jamie Klages from recording her fifth shutout of the season.
Senior Taylor Walsh struck first in the game, scoring the first goal 11 minutes in on a shot into the upper left corner of the net. Junior Krista Liskevych, who did not start Friday's game but played 63 of the 90 mintues, fired in the next shot to put the Badgers up 2-0. The goal was Liskevych's second of the season, and she scored it just seconds after entering the game for Wisconsin.
Five minutes later, freshman Laurie Nosbusch had her turn, knocking the ball in on a serve from LIskevych for her sixth goal of the season. Overall, the Badgers put up 12 shots to Michigan's 10, and Klages recorded four saves.
The first and only Michigan goal, scored in the 88th minute, was the second of the season for senior Katie Miller and the second assist for Danelle Underwood. Wolverine goalkeeper Madison Gates started the game, giving up all of the Wisconsin goals and putting up only one save. Kristen Keane entered for Michigan in the second half to record the second save for the Wolverines.
'We were really happy to get our second Big Ten victory, especially because it was at home,' said Wisconsin Head Coach Paula Wilkins. 'The team got ahead quick by scoring three goals in the first twenty minutes of play, so they felt relaxed out there. We 're looking forward to the game on Sunday and want to continue the momentum. '
Women's soccer will close out the weekend Sunday at 1 p.m. in the McClimon Soccer Complex to face Michigan State, where the Badgers will look for their third consecutive Big Ten conference victory at home. Check UWBadgers.com for scores and updates.
