Badger golf in eighth at Lady Northern

The 64th-ranked University of Wisconsin women's golf team returned to action following a two-week layoff on Saturday and is now eighth place after two rounds of the 2008 Lady Northern Invitational in West Lafayette. The tournament is being played at the par-72, 6,276-yard Kampen Golf Course.
The team was in fifth place after round one, shooting a 20-over 308. The Badgers slipped in the standings though with a 28-over, 316 in round two. For the tournament, Wisconsin is 48 strokes over par with a 624. Host-school Purdue leads the tournament with a 17-over, 593.
Leading the way for the Badgers is junior Kelsey Verbeten (Green Bay, Wis.). She is tied for 18th with a nine-over 153. She opened up round one with a three-over 75 and found herself in a tie for seventh place. In the second round, she posted a six-over, 78.
Two Badger golfers are tied for 22nd place. Freshman Jessie Gerry (Madison, Wis.) and senior Isabel Alvarez (Gijon, Spain) are each 10-over par with a 154. Their days were remarkably similar as each shot a 76 in round one and a 78 in round two. Alvarez is competing in the tournament as an individual, while Gerry's score counts toward the team score.
Freshman Molly Schemm (Ft. Atkinson, Wis.) is three strokes behind Gerry and Alvarez. She is 13-over par with a 157. She finished the opening round in a tie for 22nd with a five-over 77, but fell back to her current spot at 35th by shooting an eight-over 80 in the second round.
Sophomore Carly Werwie finds herself in a tie for 53rd. The Kenosha, Wis. native shot a 17-over 161 in her two rounds, first shooting a nine-over 81 and then following it up with an eight-over 80 in the second round.
Rounding out the Badger competitors is freshman Ellie Arkin (Reedsburg, Wis.). She is tied for 56th and is +18 for the tournament with a 162. She shot an opening round of 80 but followed it up with an 82.
