
Badgers take 10th at Lady Northern Invitational

The 64th-ranked University of Wisconsin women's golf team ended in 10th place at the 2008 Lady Northern Invitational, completing its first tournament in two weeks on Sunday. The tournament was played at the par-72, 6,276-yard Kampen Golf Course in West Lafayette, Ind.
The team, which was in eighth after two rounds, shot a 35-over, 323 on Sunday to end in 10th place. For the tournament, the Badgers shot a 947 (308-316-323). Host-school Purdue won the team portion of the event with a 31-over, 895.
Senior Isabel Alvarez (Gijon, Spain) was the top Badger golfer. Competing as an individual, Alvarez earned the best finish of her career, ending in a tie for 12th place. Her previous best finish was at the 2006 Badger Invitational where tied for 15th. After shooting a 76 in round one and a 78 in round two, Alvarez ended her tournament with another 76 in round three. Her three-round total was a 14-over, 230.
Amongst the Badgers competing toward the team score, freshman Jessie Gerry (Madison, Wis.) was the top golfer. She shot a final round 80 to finish in a tie for 20th. For the tournament, Gerry was 18-over par with a 234 (76-78-80).
Junior Kelsey Verbeten (Green Bay, Wis.) shot a season-high round of 85 to end in a tie for 36th. She was in 18th place following round two, but slipped to a three-round total of 22-over, 238 (75-78-85).
One stroke behind Verbeten was sophomore Carly Werwie (Kenosha, Wis.). Werwie posted her best round of the tournament with a final round of 78. She finished in a tie for 39th place with a 23-over, 239 (81-80-78).
Junior Molly Schemm (Ft. Atkinson, Wis.) shot a 241 (77-80-84) to end in a tie for 43rd. She was tied for 35th after round two before slipping.
Freshman Ellie Arkin (Reedsburg, Wis.) rounded out the Badger competitors and finished in a tie for 54th. She shot a 27-over, 243 including an 81 in round three.
The women's golf team will conclude the fall portion of its 2008-09 schedule when it goes to Charleston, S.C. for the Edwin Watts-Palmetto Intercollegiate on Oct. 27 and 28.
