
Badgers finish fall season with 7th place finish

The 69th-ranked University of Wisconsin women's golf team finished off the fall portion of its 2008-09 schedule on Tuesday by placing seventh at the 2008 Edwin Watts-Palmetto Intercollegiate in Kiawah Island, S.C. Before playing round three, the19-team field had to complete round two on Tuesday after it was suspended on Monday due to darkness.
The Badgers shot a 317 in round two before following it up with a 314 in the final round. The team finished with a 934 (303-317-314), 27 strokes behind tournament winner-Georgia State.
Freshman Jessie Gerry led the way for the Badgers finishing in a tie for 20th. The Madison native was the only team member to shoot sub-80 rounds in the tournament's first two rounds, as she opened with a 77 and followed it with a 75. In the final round, Gerry shot an 80 to end with a 232 for the tournament. She finished eight strokes behind the individual champion.
Sophomore Carly Werwie (Kenosha, Wis.) had her best tournament of the season, earning both her top-finish and best 54-hole score for the season. She shot a 233 to finish in a tie for 23rd, besting her old marks of 236 set at the Cougar Classic and a tie for 39th at the Lady Northern Invitational. After opening the tournament by tying a season-best round of 75, Werwie shot an 82 in the second round but came back with a 76 in the final round.
Junior Kelsey Verbeten (Green Bay, Wis.) finished three strokes behind Werwie. Verbeten finished with a three-round total of 236 to end in a tie for 34th. Verbeten was tied with Werwie for 15th after the opening round, but shot an 80 in the second round and an 81 in the final round.
Two Badger golfers tied for 37th as senior Isabel Alvarez (Gijon, Spain) and freshman Ellie Arkin (Reedsburg, Wis.) each shot a 237. Alvarez got there by shooting a 78-80-79, while Arkin posted a 76-82-79.
The women's golf team will return to competition on February 1, when the team travels to Peoria, Ari. for the Westbrook Cup.
