October 31, 2008 | Women's Soccer
The Wisconsin women's soccer team played their last game of the season Friday night against Northwestern, falling 1-0 in a heartbreaking match to the Wildcats. The Badgers compiled a final 9-9-1 season record, 3-7-0 in the Big Ten, which was a large improvement over last season's 6-11-1 finish.
Emotions were high at Friday night's game, as both teams were fighting for a spot in the Big Ten tournament, which will take place next weekend in Iowa City, Iowa, with the top eight teams in the conference.
The first half was back and forth between the Badgers and the Wildcats, with Wisconsin putting up three first period shots to Northwestern's one. Freshman Erin Jacobsen had a breakaway midway through the half with an open shot on goal, but could not get past Northwestern goalkeeper Carolyn Edwards. The second period was also full of close shots on both sides. Wisconsin senior goalkeeper Jamie Klages had a series of difficult saves late in the second half, but gave up a shot with ten minutes remaining in the game.
Alicia Herczeg scored for the Wildcats, her fourth goal of the season, getting past the defense and putting the ball in the corner of the net unassisted. Herczeg's goal ended the Badgers' chance of advancing to next weekend's Big Ten tournament.
Klages did not have to make any saves in the first half, but came out with 3 on the game. Edwards had two saves in the first and none in the second half to keep the Badgers scoreless the whole game. Northwestern did not put up any shots on goal in the first half, but ended up out-shooting the Badgers 12-6 on the game.
Friday night was the last collegiate game for seniors Taylor Walsh, Tricia Krombach, Sheri Ferron and Klages, as they were honored in a pre-game ceremony at the McClimon Soccer Complex.
