Byrne honored as Great Lakes Coach of the Year
November 21, 2008 | Men's Cross Country
In his first season at the University of Wisconsin, head coach Mick Byrne was recognized by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association as the Great Lakes Region Coach of the Year. The Badgers have captured their 10th straight Big Ten Conference title along with their seventh-straight Great Lakes Regional title under Byrne this season.
After spending almost a quarter-century at Iona College, Byrne took a job with the Badgers after Jerry Schumacher stepped down. The Badgers already were a powerhouse in the conference and region, so Byrne had a lot to work with in his first year. Going into the NCAA Championships on Monday, Byrne will look to continue the streak of six-straight top five finishes for the cross country program.
