Bingo!
November 03, 2008 | Women's Basketball
Last week, four UW student athletes took some time out of their busy schedules to play Wisconsin Bingo with the second graders at Prairie View Elementary School in Oregon, Wis. Alyssa Karel and Anya Covington from the Badger women's basketball team as well as Morgan Salow and Allison Wack from the volleyball team joined together to help the kids celebrate their unit on Wisconsin.
The kids learned fun facts about Wisconsin such as the state flower, animal, tree and other historical facts about the state. The Badgers in attendance were there to help out the kids, but ended up learning a few things from the second graders.
'The kids were so cute and enthusiastic and so proud of everything they learned about the state of Wisconsin,' Wack said. 'They LOVED when they knew an answer and we didn't.'
While the bingo game was fun for all, the Badger athletes know how important their young fans are and used this encounter to teach them valuable lessons about sportsmanship.
'A lot of them were worried about getting bingo for themselves and not for the other groups, so we used this as an opportunity to talk about sportsmanship,' Covington said. 'I think it's great to give back and instill knowledge in them because they are up and coming.'
These four Badgers not only know the importance of giving back to the community, but the value in working together with other teams. Members of the Badger women's basketball team have been regulars in attendance at the UW Field House for volleyball matches and it is safe to say the volleyball players will be returning the support once the women's basketball season begins.
'It was great working with Morgan and Allison,' Karel said. 'I think this year especially; all the women athletes are becoming better friends and supporting each other. We go to their games and they will come to ours. It's fun to be with them and see different teams and different experiences.'
