February 20, 2008 | Men's Track & Field
The 2007 NCAA championship banner for the University of Wisconsin men's track and field team will be unveiled in a ceremony on Saturday during the Badger Open track meet. Coach Ed Nuttycombe and members of the UW track team will be present at 1:25 p.m. in the Camp Randall Memorial Sports Center (The Shell) for the unveiling.
'I'm excited about being able to display the national championship banner in the facility,' said Nuttycombe, who was named the 2007 indoor national coach of the year.' I'm especially excited that it will be up next weekend for the Big Ten championship. It's an honor to not only have it be the first track banner (in the Shell) but also the first NCAA championship banner in Big Ten history.'
Wisconsin won the 2007 NCAA Indoor Championship, becoming the first Big Ten Conference school to win a national championship in track and field. The title was the first national title for a UW track and field team and the first NCAA men's title won by a non-Southeastern Conference team since 1996.
The Badgers scored 40 points for the win while Florida State finished second with 35 points. Texas was third with 34 points and Stanford rounded out the trophy teams, placing fourth with 28 points.
The Badgers crowned one individual national champion and picked up 10 All-America honors. Chris Solinsky won the NCAA title in the 5,000 meters and also finished second in the 3,000 meters. He was named the national indoor athlete of the year for his performances.
Wisconsin also picked up points from Demi Omole (second in 60-meter dash); the distance medley relay team of Craig Miller, James Groce, Joe Pierre and Jack Bolas (third); Joe Detmer (fifth in the heptathlon); and Tim Nelson (fifth in the 5,000 meters).
The Badger Open begins with the field events at 1 p.m. on Saturday in the Shell. Running events start at 1:30 p.m. after the national championship banner ceremony. Admission to the meet is free and free parking is available in lots 16, 17 and 19 near Camp Randall Stadium.
