
UW Vaults into Fourth After Solid Second Round

The University of Wisconsin women's golf team had an impressive showing at the first day of the 2008 Big Ten Championships. The Badgers played two rounds of golf on the Penn State Blue Course in University Park, Pa., and are in fourth place after the first day. Wisconsin scored a 314 in the first round but then made a vast improvement in the second round and shot a 292 for a day one total of 606.
The Badgers' second round score of 292 is a season low and also ranks as the second best score for 18 holes for any UW team in the program's history. Wisconsin 's best score was a 289 at the Legends Shootout in 2001.
Purdue currently leads the 11-team championship with a 586 (298-288) on the par-72, 6,271-yard course. The Boilermakers' Christel Boeljon leads the individual field and she is two under par with a 143 (73-70).
Two UW underclassmen had a strong showing on the first day and helped the Badgers improve in the team competition. Freshman Carly Werwie and sophomore Kelsey Verbeten are both tied at seventh place and have a 36-hole score of 149. Werwie shot a 76 in the first round and then a 73 in the second round while Verbeten tallied a 77 in the opening 18 holes and finished Friday with a 72.
Senior Katie Elliott finished the first day in the top 30 and she is tied for 25th with a 153. She shot an 80 in the first round and improved to a 73 in the second. Junior Natasha Lopez is tied for 34th and she also improved on her first round scores. She shot an 82 in the first round and then a 74 in the second for a total of 156.
Juniors Isabel Alvarez and Jeana Dahl also competed for Wisconsin. Alvarez is tied for 48th with a 160 (81-79) while Dahl is in 62nd with a 174 (81-83).
