
Wisconsin Takes Sixth at Big Ten Championships

The University of Wisconsin women's golf team finished up competition at the 2008 Big Ten Championships on Sunday. The Badgers placed sixth out of the 11 conference teams by totaling a 1223 for four rounds (314-292-304-313). This is Wisconsin's best finish at the conference championship since it tied for fifth place in 2004 and breaks the Badgers' two-year streak of finishing ninth. Purdue won the conference crown with an 1169 (298-288-286-297) and the Boilermakers' Maria Hernandez won the individual title by finishing seven under-par at 281 (75-71-66-69).
Six UW golfers competed on the par-72, 6,271-yard Penn State Blue Course in University Park, Pa. The Badgers had two underclassmen finish in the top 30 and they were led by freshman Carly Werwie. The Kenosha, Wis., native shot a 76 on Sunday to tie for 14th with a total score of 302 (76-73-77-76). Werwie has now led the Badgers for three-straight tournaments.
Sophomore Kelsey Verbeten also made her mark by tying for 26th. She shot an 82 in the final round to put her total at 307 (77-72-76-82).
Senior Katie Elliott competed in her final Big Ten Championship and she tied for 32nd. She scored a 76 on Sunday and finished three strokes behind Verbeten with a 310 (80-73-81-76).
Junior Natasha Lopez tied for 38th with a final tally of 314. She scored a 79 in the final two rounds and had an 82 and a 74 in the opening two rounds.
Juniors Isabel Alvarez and Jeana Dahl also competed for Wisconsin. Alvarez finished tied for 49th with a 321 (81-79-76-85) while Dahl was one stroke behind her at 322 (81-83-75-83) and tied for 54th.
