May 07, 2008 | Women's Golf
The University of Wisconsin women's golf team held its annual awards banquet last Friday at Heritage Hall inside Camp Randall Stadium. The Badgers handed out six different awards throughout the evening and said goodbye to the lone senior on the team, Madison native, Katie Elliott.
During her four years at Wisconsin Elliott has been one of the most decorated athletes in UW women's golf history and she added two more accolades to her list. First, Elliott earned the team's Player of the Year award for having the lowest tournament scoring average. Elliott led Wisconsin the last three years in scoring average and finished the 2007-08 season with a 76.7. She averaged a 77.1 for her career, which is the second best career scoring average all-time at Wisconsin.
Elliott also won the Badger Power Award. This honor is given to the golfer who displays excellence and leadership in strength and conditioning.
Freshman Carly Werwie (Kenosha, Wis.) came on strong in the spring and she was also honored twice at the awards banquet. She first earned the Putting Award which is given to the player with the lowest putts per green in regulation and the Newcomer Award. This award is given to the new player with the lowest tournament scoring average. Werwie had the second-best scoring average on the team and finished with a 77.5.
Sophomore Beth Weinstein (Highland Park, Ill.) took home the Most Improved Award which is given to the player with the largest stroke improvement from last year. As a freshman, Weinstein had an 82.2 average and this year, she improved to 79.21.
The final award of the evening was given to Jeana Dahl. The junior from Fargo, N.D. took home the Academic Excellence award for having the highest cumulative GPA on the team for fall and spring of 2007.
