July 28, 2008 | Women's Golf
While much of the world will be focused on Beijing in the coming weeks for the highest of international competitions, former Badger golfer Katie Elliott is preparing to don red, white and blue in September for the World University Golf Championship. Elliott is one of five female golfers selected to play for Team USA in the event, which will be held on Sept. 2-5 in Sun City, South Africa.
This is the 12th World University Golf Championship. The U.S. women's team has won the event six times, including 2004 and 2006, and never placed lower than fourth. In the women's event, each country may enter five competitors in the individual event and three competitors in the team event of whom the two with the best results each day will count for the classification by team per day. All golfers play for medalist honors. The championship will be stroke-play played over 72 holes stroke-play, 18 holes a day for the four consecutive days of the event.
Elliott, who completed her senior season at Wisconsin in the spring of 2008, was a second-team All-Big Ten selection in 2007 and led UW in scoring average the last three years. She averaged a 77.1 for her career, which is the second-best career scoring average all-time at Wisconsin.
