Badgers down Waves 3-1
September 19, 2008 | Women's Soccer
The Wisconsin women's soccer team boosted their season record to 5-2-1 and an undefeated 3-0 at home on Friday in a 3-1 victory over Pepperdine. The Waves (3-4-1) pick up their fourth loss traveling to Wisconsin for their first road game this season.
The Badgers started the game with lots of momentum, scoring twice in the first 35 minutes of the match and leaving Pepperdine scoreless going into the second half. Wisconsin out-shot the competition 10-6, and goalkeeper Jamie Klages had one save on the game.
After a series of close shots, Wisconsin picked up the first goal just under 16 minutes into the game. Sheri Ferron, assisted by Taryn Francel, had the first shot and her first goal of the season. In the 33rd minute, Darcy Riley put the ball in the net on a rebound off a save to bring the score to 2-0. Erin Jacobsen assisted Riley in scoring the second goal, which is also her first of the season.
Pepperdine came out strong in the second half, but did not respond until late in the game. Jacobsen scored the third goal for Wisconsin, her second of the season, off a penalty kick to increase the Badgers' lead to 3-0. But with 13 minutes left, Pepperdine 's leading scorer Amanda Rupp got one past Wisconsin's Jamie Klages on a breakaway to prevent the shut out.
The Waves' first-half goalkeeper, Lacey Heck, and the second-half goalkeeper, Kayla Stolte, each put up one save for the game.
'They have a little bit different style being from the west coast, but it 's good to get out there and play against a good Pepperdine team,' said Wisconsin Head Coach Paula Wilkins. 'I think the girls were a little nervous in the first ten minutes, but then settled down and did a lot of the things we told them to do. '
The Badgers will continue their home stint Sunday against Nevada at 11 a.m. They will remain at home next weekend for their first Big Ten contests against Illinois Sept. 26 and Purdue Sept. 28.
