
Women's golf hosts Badger Invitational

The 56th-ranked University of Wisconsin women's golf team returns to the links this weekend as it plays host to the 2008 Badger Invitational at the par 72, 6,216-yard University of Wisconsin Golf Course'University Ridge in Verona, Wis. Play will begin with 36 holes on Saturday and conclude with 18 on Sunday.
12 teams will be participating in this weekend's tournament, and all 12 are currently among Golfweek's top-150. California will be the top team in the field as it is currently ranked second in the nation, while Indiana (No. 36), Tulane (No. 37) and College of Charleston (No. 50) round out the schools that are also ranked in the top 50.
The Badgers will have 10 golfers representing them this weekend, with five competing toward the team score and five competing as individuals. Senior Isabel Alvarez (Gijon, Spain), juniors Kelsey Verbeten (Green Bay, Wis.), Molly Schemm (Ft. Atkinson, Wis.) and Heather Herrick (Hartland, Wis.) and sophomore Carly Werwie (Kenosha, Wis.) will be the team competitors. Senior Jeana Dahl (Fargo, N.D.), juniors Ann Marie Sztukowski (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and Beth Weinstein (Highland Park, Ill.) and freshmen Jessie Gerry (Madison, Wis.) and Ellie Arkin (Reedsburg, Wis.) will all compete as individuals.
Wisconsin has competed in one tournament so far this year, taking 14th at the Cougar Classic. Verbeten was the team's top finisher as she finished in a tie for 19th with a 218 (71-74-73), a career-best mark for 36 and 54 holes. Herrick also recorded a one-over 73 in round three. Her score was the best of her career for 18 holes, breaking the old mark of 75. Herrick's two-round total of 155 and three-round total of 228 set new personal bests, besting old marks of 158 and 244, respectively.
Alvarez ended in a tie for 66th with a 14-over par, 230 (74-75-81). Werwie finished in a tie for 85th after shooting a 20-over par, 236 (79-80-77). Gerry (Madison, Wis.) wrapped up her first collegiate tournament with a career-best round of 77. She ended the tournament in a tie for 94th with a 239 (80-82-77), good for 23-over par.
Saturday's opening round will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start followed by round two beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday's final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. Admission and parking for the 2008 Badger Invitational are both free.
