Women's soccer falls in second Big Ten contest
September 28, 2008 | Women's Soccer
In another hard-fought contest at the McClimon Soccer Complex, the Badger women's soccer team fell 1-0 to Purdue on Sunday afternoon in their second Big Ten game of the season and their second game of the weekend. Wisconsin is now 6-4-1 and 0-2 in Big Ten play, but the Badgers still have as many wins so far this season as all of last season combined.
Wisconsin got off to a slow start, putting up only one shot in the first half. Purdue had three shots on goal in the first half, one of which went in to put the Boilermakers up 1-0 with 13 minutes left. Loredana Riverso scored for Purdue on a deflected shot by Badger goalkeeper Jamie Klages, with an assist by Lauren Montenegro. Riverso is Purdue's leading scorer, and it was her fifth goal of the season.
The Badgers did not have many scoring opportunities through the first half, but Klages had two saves and the defense helped hold the Boilermakers to one goal in the period.
But the Badgers took it up a notch in the second half, starting out the period with a series of corner kicks, shots on goal and a narrow save by Klages, who ended up with five saves on the game. The momentum shifted in favor of Wisconsin, but the team was unable to turn those opportunities into goals.
Even though the Boilermakers out-shot the Badgers 5-1 in the first half, Wisconsin had nine shots in the second period to Purdue's five and out-cornered the competition 6-1. Senior Taylor Walsh led the Badgers in shots on goal in her 43 minutes of play with two, followed by freshmen Erin Jacobsen, Rita Keimakh and Lauren Cochlin, who each had one.
Wisconsin heads on the road for the next two games to play Ohio State Oct. 3 at 6:30 p.m. in Columbus, Ohio and Penn State Oct. 5 at 11 a.m in University Park, Pa. Visit UWBadgers.com for coverage and live stats on away matches.
