Wisconsin sophomore defenseman Cody Goloubef (Oakville, Ontario) helped Team Canada win its record-tying fifth consecutive gold medal at the 2009 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship Monday night in Ottawa, Ontario.
Goloubef and Team Canada skated to a 5-1 victory over Sweden in the gold medal game last night. In the six games Canada played, Goloubef finished with one assist, while ranking second in the tournament with a plus-10 rating and second on his team with eight penalty minutes.
Canada finished the tournament a perfect 6-0-0, including a 7-4 victory over Team USA that gave Canada its pool crown and a bye into the semifinals. Canada went on to defeat Russia in a shootout in the semifinals after tying the game with five seconds left at 5-5, before taking out Sweden.
Last year, Badger Kyle Turris and Canada won the gold with a championship game victory over the same Swedish squad.
Goloubef's Badger teammate, sophomore defenseman Ryan McDonagh (Arden Hills, Minn.) helped Team USA to a fifth-place finish at this year's World Juniors. McDonagh was named Team USA's player of the game in the squad's quarterfinal loss to Slovakia. He finished the tournament with three assists in six games and shared the team lead with a plus-5 rating. The Americans completed their tournament by finishing second in their pool behind Canada, then taking fifth place with a 3-2 overtime victory over Czech Republic on Sunday. McDonagh was credited with the primary assist on the game-winning goal.
Goloubef and McDonagh, both of whom missed Wisconsin's last four games, are expected to be back in the lineup for the Badgers this weekend at Alaska Anchorage.
