With 18 seconds left in regulation, freshman Monica Lam-Feist netted her first collegiate goal to force the game into overtime against the No. 19-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes.
"It was amazing. I couldn't believe it. It took my breath away," described Lam-Feist. "Laurie just poked it to me and my shot went in."
This was the sixth overtime for the Badgers this season with a record of 2-1-3 after ending Friday night with a 1-1 tie at the McClimon Soccer Complex. With the tie, Wisconsin is in second in the Big Ten standings, one point behind Penn State which UW will face on Sunday.
"Coming into this game I thought I'd be happy with a 1-1 result, but after talking to the team and knowing the potential for our program we are disappointed," head coach Paula Wilkins commented after the game. "It showed we had the courage to come back. Our young players did a great job and the team showed we deserve to compete with top teams."
The first half remained scoreless as Wisconsin's best chance came at the 30th minute on back-to-back corners. On the first try, freshman Alev Kelter headed the ball from inside the box that was saved by Ohio State's Lauren Robertson going out past the end line. On UW's second corner, Monica Lam-Feist got a high shot off from the top of the box.
With 12 minutes left in the first half, Ohio State had its closest scoring opportunity when Ashley Bowyer took an open shot but came up short when Wisconsin's keeper Michele Dalton made the save.
Wisconsin's final scoring opportunity of the half came in the final three minutes off another corner kick. Meghan Flannery took the corner which set up Krista Liskevych. Liskevych took the shot from the top of the 18-yard box that Robertson carried over the crossbar.
The second half proved to be more aggressive on both sides of the field. The Badgers had their first chance to score right away in the 53rd minute. A corner kick by Flannery set up Laurie Nosbusch who was able to head the ball but came up wide.
Ohio State then answered on its own corner at the 59th minute. Lauren Steuer took the corner for the Buckeyes setting up Tiffany Cameron who headed the ball over the crossbar.
Ohio State was able to capitalize in the 62nd minute of play to take the 1-0 lead. Cameron headed another ball off a corner but this time finished with a goal. Ashley Bowyer and Colleen Brady were credited with the assists on the play.
After a couple more UW chances, Lam-Feist delivered the game-tying goal with 18 seconds left in regulation to force overtime.
Wisconsin was unable to get a shot on goal through two overtime periods, as OSU connected on net twice. Dalton came up with a big save for the Badgers with two minutes left in the second overtime to settle for a 1-1 tie.
Ohio State edged Wisconsin in shots, 12-11. Dalton finished the game with six saves and Robertson had four. The Badgers finished with seven corner kicks to Ohio State's five.
The Badgers regular season home finale is this Sunday as they host Penn State. Wisconsin will honor its four seniors before the game, kickoff is at noon.
