MADISON, Wis.-At the inaugural Alamo Invitational on Tuesday, the 45th-ranked Wisconsin women's golf team took 5th place at the par-72, 6,323 yard Briggs Ranch Golf Club in San Antonio, Texas.
Tournament officials canceled the first two rounds scheduled for Monday after heavy rains made the course unplayable. Play was condensed to one 18-hole round on Tuesday, beginning with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
In the condensed tournament, the UW carded a single-round score of 303 and had its second-best finish. Two Badgers finished the tournament in the top-15.
The 10th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers finished in the top spot, notching a 1-over-par, 18-hole score of 289. Notre Dame and Texas A&M finished three strokes behind with team scores of 292. Tennessee's Nathalie Mansson and Notre Dame's Annie Brophy tied for first place individually with a score of 70.
Wisconsin sophomore Jessie Gerry (Madison, Wis.) finished just one stroke behind Brophy and Mansson, carding a 1-under-par 71. After finishing the round with three birdies, Gerry's score marks her second lowest 18-hole round of the season. Her season-best was set on Sept. 13 when she recorded a second round score of 70 at the Cougar Classic.
Kelsey Verbeten (Green Bay, Wis.) tied for 13th with a 2-over-par 74. The senior was 4-over-par going into No. 15, but finished strong, birdying two of her last three holes. Verbeten finished with her second- best finish of the season. Her best was at the Johnie Imes Invitational from Oct. 5-6 when she tied for 12th with Gerry.
Junior Carly Werwie (Kenosha, Wis.) and Senior Molly Schemm (Ft. Atkinson, Wis.) tied for 39th. The duo shared a score of 79. Freshman Alyssa Elliot (Madison, Wis.) tied for 53rd, finishing just three strokes behind Schemm and Werwie with a score of 82.
