Columbia, Mo. -
The Wisconsin women's golf team notched a first place finish at the Johnie Imes Invitational in Columbia, Mo., on Tuesday afternoon. The victory marks the Badgers' first 54-hole tournament win since Wisconsin tallied a 904 on October 19, 1999 at the Bale Chevrolet-Honda Invitational in Little Rock, Ark. "I'm really proud of the way the girls finished today," head coach Todd Oehrlein said. "It was a difficult golf course with hazards at every hole. You couldn't let your guard down. It was a true team effort." On Tuesday, the Badgers clinched the top spot at the par-72, 6,204-yard Club at Old Hawthorne with a score of 909 (309-299-301), four strokes better than second-place Tulsa (301-305-306--912). Kristina Merkle of Tulsa was the first place individual medalist, carding at 222 (69-74-79), but Wisconsin senior Molly Schemm (Ft. Atkinson, Wis.) finished only a stroke behind to take second with a 7-over-par 223 (72-74-77). Schemm shared the second place position with Missouri's Michelle Morgan (79-71-73). Schemm started the tournament strong with steady play, balancing four bogeys with four birdies in the first round to finish at an even-par 72. Holes 7, 10, 11 and 13 presented Schemm with some challenges, but she answered with birdies on Nos. 3, 5, 8 and 15 to end the second set of 18 with a 2-over-par 74. The righty faced her toughest round of the tournament in the last 18-holes, finishing with a 77. The Badger duo of sophomore Jessie Gerry (Madison, Wis.) and senior Kelsey Verbeten (Green Bay, Wis.) tied for 12th place. The teammates finished five strokes behind Schemm with a 228. Gerry had her best round during the second 18 holes of play when she finished with three birdies for a 2-over-par 74. Verbeten made up for a tough first round of 11-over-par 83 in rounds 2 and 3. She finished the second round with an even-par 72, balancing two bogeys with two birdies. The senior tallied a 73 in round three to cap off the tournament and surpass her season high of 230. Freshman Alyssa Elliott (Madison, Wis.) tied for 33rd (77-82-75--234) and while junior Carly Werwie (Kenosha, Wis.) completed the tournament victory, tallying a 237 (81-79-77). The Badgers hit the green again on Oct 26-27 to compete in The Alamo Invitational in San Antonio, TX. Click here for full stats from Tuesday's victory.
